1. Potential New Users of EncounterPRO-OS Pediatric EMR
Download, install, and play around with either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the EncounterPRO Pediatric EMR Workflow System. Chart a sick visit using the Test Drive documentation. Check out the EncounterPRO-OS User Documentation Wiki. The current downloadable version of EncounterPRO-OS is alpha. EncounterPRO-OS is being released to the community to obtain bug reports and enhancement requests.
However, as soon as EncounterPRO-OS goes Gold, use the EncounterPRO Pediatric EMR Workflow System in your daily practice--free. Should you need or require their services, EncounterPRO Healthcare Resource, Inc. and other EncounterPRO-OS partners are lining up to supply a variety of implementation, interface, clinical messaging, and support services.
2. Potential New Developers on the EncounterPRO-OS Platform
If you are a .Net programmer and want to get your hands on an in-use (thousands of users), award-winning (14 national including three HIMSS Davies), mature (since 1995)-but-innovative (process-aware) EMR system, EncounterPRO-OS is your baby. However, EncounterPRO-OS is no ordinary EMR; it is the first fourth generation ambulatory EMR. As summarized in van der Aalst and Kees van Hee's landmark Workflow Management: Models, Methods, and Systems, the development of information systems has passed through four phases:
- decomposition of applications,
- movement of data into shared databases,
- movement of user interface management out of applications, and
- movement of process management out of applications into workflow management systems.
Compared to other industries, today’s EHRs, while complex and sophisticated in many ways, have not yet migrated process management into foundational workflow management systems. While EncounterPRO has been around since 1995, it is based on workflow management, clinical groupware, business process management, and adaptive case management (all of which are "process-aware") only now beginning to diffuse into healthcare.
If you are interested in enhancing the EncounterPRO-OS "open core" of source code, or creating your own proprietary extensions that you can sell bundled with free open source EncounterPRO-OS EMR platform, let us know!
3. Other Potential New EncounterPRO-OS Partners
You’re not a programmer? There are still ways you can join the EncounterPRO-OS community on either the free and open source side or the for-profit and proprietary side of the fence. A layer of customizable content and configurable behavior determines the EncounterPRO-OS workflow behavior. You can create screens, picklists, templates, workflows, menu structures, documentation and so on. Share your best practices with the EncounterPRO-OS open source community, or sell your services and components.
4. Current EncounterPRO EMR Workflow System Customers
If you are an existing customer, what does this mean for you? EncounterPRO going open source is good news. Free open source communities fix, improve, market, distribute, and support their products through mechanisms unavailable to proprietary closed source products. Third-party vendors such as EncounterPRO Healthcare Resource, Inc. will continue to offer implementation, interface, and support services. To the degree that you are willing, please participate in the free open source EncounterPRO-OS EMR project, along with the developers and partners you depend on and who depend on you.
5. Current EncounterPRO EMR Workflow System Partners
You have a head start. Many of you are already selling and supporting EncounterPRO. You’ve been poking around in the tables, creating work-arounds of which we are not even aware. Now you can poke around the code too. Hire a programmer. Make EncounterPRO-OS do tricks. Contribute code back to the open source base. Create open source or for-profit component extensions to run on the EncounterPRO-OS EMR Clinical Groupware Platform.
